Airdrie Real Estate was established as a railway village in 1889 during the construction of the railway between Calgary and Edmonton. Prior to 1901, the area only contained railway buildings. Development began, with the first farmhouse and barn then later followed by a post office and store. Knights of Airdrie is a senior men's lacrosse team which plays in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League and the Airdrie Thunder are a Jr. B level hockey team which competes in the Heritage Junior B Hockey League.
