Strathmore is a community located 50 kilometers east of Calgary on the Trans-Canada Highway. The CPR named the town after one of its benefactors - Claude Bowes-Lyon, the Earl of Strathmore. Incorporated in 1911, the original population was around 50. One hundred years later, the current population of Strathmore was 12,305 people as of the may 2011 census. At that time the total number of dwellings was 4, 577. The Town of Strathmore has quite a history in southern Alberta. Originally a hamlet set up by the Canadian Pacific Railway, it gained notoriety on July 28, 1883. Canadian Pacific Railway building crew manually laid 14 Kilometers of track across the prairies to Cheadle, Alberta in 10 hours which set a record. Unfortunately those tracks are gone due to developments, but the record still stands. The current location of Strathmore is now just a few kilometers north of the original hamlet.
